Ride for a Reason 2020

Goal $1,000.00

On April 25 I will ride from Oakland Technical High School to the California State Capitol Building in Sacramento. This is almost 110 miles! To prepare, I've spending a lot of time on my bike since January, riding my bike all over northern California. Why would I do such a thing?

My 13 year old has benefitted tremendously from enrichment programs offered by the Oakland public schools she has attended. Unfortunately, those programs are not available to all students. These "extras," such as music, art and even a library are only available at schools where parents and others have been able to raise funds. This should not be the case -- these programs should be available to everyone (as they were when I was a child).

Ride for a Reason helps raise funds for schools, and also brings awareness to the need for just and equlitable funding for our children. Funds raised through R4R go directly to the schools. My (modest!) registration fee covers all other ride costs, so you can know that all money donated goes to schools. The funds for schools are offered without any strings attached, so school administrators can use funds how they see fit.

The systematic de-funding of public schools motivates me to ride, and I thank you for supporting me, in whatever way you can, on my journey.

If you want to learn more, read on. THANK YOU!

RIDE FOR A REASON is our annual bike ride from Oakland to Sacramento to advocate for public education, and raise essential funds for public school enrichment programs. We ride to the steps of the State Capitol to advocate for greater funding for education.

Many elective classes and enrichment programs depend entirely on community fundraising. But community fundraising alone can’t do the deep work needed to fully support all schools. That’s why we ride to Sacramento — to bring attention to underfunded schools.

The funds we raise will be split evenly between Edna Brewer Middle School, Claremont Middle, Oakland Technical High, Emerson Elementary, Westlake Middle School, Oakland International High, Roosevelt Middle School, Skyline High School, Life Academy, Montera Middle School, and Oakland Equity Allies, Encinal Junior and Senior High School!

Your donation is greatly appreciated!
