Goal $3,600.00

Dear family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors,

Ride for a Reason (R4R) is a bike ride to Sacramento to draw attention to the crisis in funding for K-12 education in California, and also a fundraiser for local public schools.

Now in its twelfth year, R4R has raised over $1 million dollars to support enrichment programs for students in Oakland public schools.  This year, the ride will benefit eleven Oakland Public Schools, and for the first time, also a school in Alameda.  At all of the schools we support, 50 percent-or-more of the students qualify for free- or reduced-price lunches.  Our goals are to raise at least $180,000 and to have 350-or-more riders pedaling to Sacramento on Saturday, April 25th. A few examples of the enrichment programs we are supporting this year with the funds raised from the 2019 ride, include the following:

  1. A social-emotional counselor and an after-school soccer club at Oakland International High, where all students are recent immigrants and English-language learners, and many are refugees fleeing violence;

  1. An outdoor education program at Roosevelt Middle that includes a whitewater rafting trip on the South Fork of the American River; and

  1. A bike tour along the California Coast, where 25 high school seniors at Life Academy in East Oakland will learn and grow together while pedaling from the Oakland to San Luis Obispo.

These programs make a huge difference for the students, and it is my honor to be a member of the R4R leadership team, and a rider for the twelve straight year.

I am writing now to ask you to make a generous donation to keep  programs like these going strong.  Working together we are making a real difference in the lives of students in Oakland and Alameda. That’s why I will be riding my bike 106-miles on Saturday, April 25th. Thanks so much for your consideration and support.

Much Love,
