Yay we made it! Thanks for your generous support!!

The pictures are: The Emerson soccer team after their first win this season; Benny after the ride with Mr. Limata, his soccer mentor and Ella's 1st grade teacher; Benny riding toward the Tower Bridge in Sacramento April 27, 2019.

We’re riding to the state capitol again to raise money for local public schools. This is Benny’s last year as an elementary school student; I can’t believe it’s been six years since Benny first rode with me as a pre-kindergartener. He’s grown up and learned so much in that time. And in his first official leadership role, he’s captain of Emerson’s first soccer team.

Want to see something super fun? Click here and watch how much these kids appreciate a visit from the Harlem Globetrotters and Marshawn Lynch, the famous football star alum of Emerson. Now imagine them getting an extra music class, a field trip, a half hour in our amazing garden, or our beautiful library—all things that benefit from these funds! Seen enough?

========================================================

Why the long bike ride? We are entering into this challenge with several goals:

  1. to raise money for educational enrichment at local elementary schools!
  2. to increase awareness in our community!
  3. to take our message to the capital in Sacramento!
  4. to participate in a fulfilling, community-building challenge!

Benny and Ella's school, Emerson Elementary, is one of seven schools that will benefit from this ride. These schools serve primarily (>70%) low-income children. Benny is about to graduate, one of the few in his cohort that stayed with Emerson since kindergarten. His sister Ella will be starting going into second grade there in the fall.

1) At Emerson Elementary, about 75% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. These are the kids who can either be buoyed out of poverty through education or be left to the terrible odds for under-educated minorities and the poor. School is our best vaccine (yes, I used that word) against poverty, against crime, against the violence and drugs of Oakland.

2) Overall, California schools are now woefully underfunded--still in the bottom 20% in the nation! We have to decide between money for a second reading interventionist and money for a counselor whose job is to prevent the forty-some boys with social-behavioral problems from falling through the cracks at such an early and vulnerable stage of life.

3) We are fortunate to be among the relatively affluent families at this school, yet these families alone cannot adequately fund the needs of the school. We are force to pass the hat until the people of California and their elected representatives increase the funding of public education.

4) Please give what you can. I know that we live in a world of great riches and even greater need. My hope and belief is that donating money for education, especially for public education, is the most leveraged kind of donating we can do.

How much money should you give? To put this fundraiser in perspective, in the excellent nearby public schools, non-public funding from the community exceeds $1000 per student per year. At Emerson we struggle to have $150 per student per year. The good news is that through grants and other mechanisms, Emerson can really leverage that money.  For concrete purposes please consider the following:

  • $100 buys musical instruments for five students
  • $50 buys a field trip or other event for two students

Thank you for reading this! Please consider contributing by clicking the Donate Now button above.

The funds we raise will be split evenly between Edna Brewer Middle School, Claremont Middle, Oakland Technical High, Emerson Elementary, Westlake Middle School, Oakland International High, Roosevelt Middle School, Skyline High School and the newest members of our school community - Life Academy and Montera Middle School!

Your donation is greatly appreciated!
