Ride for a Reason 2019

JOIN OUR 11TH ANNUAL BIKE RIDE FROM OAKLAND TO THE CAPITOL TO SUPPORT PUBLIC EDUCATION, and raise essential funds for Oakland schools. Last year, 250 students, teachers, parents and community members pedaled from Oakland to the steps of the State Capitol to advocate for greater funding for education and reform in the way that California funds its public schools. Parents, teachers, students, and community members will ride again, April 29, 2017

Many schools in California depend on community fundraising to provide elective classes and enrichment programs — things that used to be thought of as necessary like libraries, art and music, science equipment, sports programs, and low-cost after-school activities. But community fundraising alone can’t do the really deep work needed to fully support all schools, especially in big, urban districts. California teacher salaries remain uncompetitive, and our state’s spending per pupil remains well below the national average. We can’t car-wash and bake-sale our way out of big, structural problems like that.

That’s why we ride to Sacramento — to bring attention to the ongoing problem of underfunded public schools.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! HELP US REGISTER 250 RIDERS AND RAISE $120,000! Every dollar raised is shared equally between Claremont Middle, Edna Brewer Middle, Emerson Elementary, Oakland International High School, Oakland Technical High, Roosevelt Middle School, Skyline High, Westlake Middle and the new member of our family Life Academy. Welcome We encourage all our riders to raise at least $250 in pledges to help us meet our fundraising goal!

JOIN US FOR FULLY SUPPORTED 45-, 65-, AND 109-MILE RIDES, OR MAKE A PLEDGE FOR EDUCATION! Every pledge and rider makes a difference! Our 109-mile ride is organized like traditional century ride. You check in, get your map and swag, and off you go. Our 45-mile ride is perfect for novice riders, families, and kids. For this route, we provide transportation to the starting point in Vacaville. Our 65-mile ride begins at the Suisun Amtrak station.  Ride your bike from Oakland Tech to the Jack London Amtrak station to start your trek and join other riders on the Capital Corridor Train.  Disembark at the Suisun-Fairfield station and you are off!

Our experienced ride leaders support and encourage this group every mile of the way to the State Capitol on scenic, low-traffic back roads. For all of our riders, we provide SAG-wagon support, rest stops, and a great lunch. When you register to ride, you can purchase a pass for transportation for you and your bike back home to Oakland from Sacramento. (Many riders arrange their own return transportation — Amtrak is a popular option.) Every rider and volunteer will gather on the Capitol steps for our call to action and RALLY FOR EDUCATION!
